History
Epoch Times is a multi-language newspaper founded in 2000 by John Tang and a group of Chinese Americans associated with the Falun Gong spiritual movement. The paper reports news from a perspective favorable to the movement, and was originally published in six languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Spanish, French, and German.
The Epoch Times has faced criticism for publishing conspiracy theories and falsehoods; for example, it has promoted the conspiracy theory that the COVID-19 pandemic was caused by deliberate outbreak. The Newspaper has been banned in China since 2006.
In 2020, the paper was bought by Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
Ownership
Epoch Times is an independent news media organization owned by The Epoch Media Group. The Epoch Media Group is a privately held media company with no outside investors or ownership. We are funded entirely by our readers and through the sale of advertising.
Management
Epoch Times is owned by the Chinese-languageprint and multimedia publishing group Shenzhou Publishing Ltd. In 2000, Shenzhou was founded in Hong Kong by John Tang and a group of Chinese-born businessmen living inNorth America with the goal of building an “independent voice” for China. The paper’s parent company Shenzhou International Holdings Ltd is registered in the Cayman Islands.
In 2006, Epoch Times began running ads critical of the Chinese Communist Party, and soon thereafter the Chinese government began a campaign of harassment and intimidation against the newspaper. The paper’s Greater China CEO Steven Cheung said that Epoch Times “did not start to do anti-CCP work until 2006.”
In March 2007, police raided Epoch Times offices in Beijing, confiscated computers and printers, and detained several employees for interrogation. Cheung said that the raid was in response to an advertisement critical of the Communist Party that ran in the paper.
In May 2011, three months after veteran Falun Gong practitioner Wang Yuguo died following torture while in police custody, his widow Zhu Chengzhi sued six officials from Hohhot City Public Security Bureau—the city where Wang was detained—and two officers from Xincheng Detention Center in Beijing for wrongful death. The case was allowed to be heard by a court in Beijing despite strong resistance from local courts in Hohhot; it was eventually dismissed by a higher court on July 6 on procedural grounds.
