Wallace was born in 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of actress Lila Hall (née Walters; 1915–1981) and CBS newsman Mike Wallace (1918–2012). Wallace grew up in a household where “news was meals.” He began his career in journalism as a reporter for The Boston Globe. He later worked as a reporter and editor for The Washington Star and as a national correspondent for The New York Times.
In 1975, Wallace began his television career at NBC News, where he served as a Watergate correspondent and worked on the network’s flagship evening news program, NBC Nightly News. He later moved to ABC News, where he served as a White House correspondent during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. From 1982 to 1989, Wallace was anchor of Primetime Thursday, ABC’s first co-ednewsmagazine. From 1989 to 1992, he served as co-anchor of ABC’s newsmagazine 20/20 with Hugh Downs.
In 2003, Wallace joined Fox News Channel and became the host of Fox News Sunday. He has won three Emmy Awards for his work on Fox News Sunday: one for Best Interview (2007), one for Best Report in a Newscast (2009), and one for Best Political Affairs Series (2010).
