SiriusXM and Fox News have had a long-standing relationship. However, that relationship has come to an end. As of January 1st, 2021, Fox News Talk is no longer available on SiriusXM.

SiriusXM and Fox News Channel extend partnership

SiriusXM and Fox News Channel have announced an extension of their long-term partnership that will keep Fox News Talk radio on the SiriusXM platform through 2025.

The new agreement also allows SiriusXM to continue carrying Fox News Headlines 24/7, Fox News Radio, and Fox Business Network programming on its satellite radio service. All three channels are part of SiriusXM’s “Best of both worlds” package, which also includes Howard Stern’s two channels.

“We are thrilled to extend our relationship with SiriusXM, which has been a tremendous partner of ours for many years,” said FOX News Media CEO Suzanne Scott. “This renewal underscores the incredible demand from their subscribers for FOX News content across all of our audio products.”

SiriusXM President and Chief Content Officer Scott Greenstein said: “FOX News is a valued part of the SiriusXM lineup and we are proud to extend our relationship with them for years to come. Our subscribers rely on FOX News Talk for trusted conservative commentary every day, and we look forward to continuing to provide them with this important programming.”

What happened to Fox News Talk?

Fox NewsTalk abruptly went off the air on SiriusXM on November 17, 2018. The channel was replaced with a message from SiriusXM saying “Due to a programming change, Fox NewsTalk is no longer available on SiriusXM. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

SiriusXM and Fox News Channel end partnership

On November 21, 2018, SiriusXM and Fox News Channel (FNC) announced that they would be ending their long-standing partnership. As a result of the decision, Fox News Talk (channel 450 on SiriusXM) will cease to exist as of December 21, 2018.

This move comes as a surprise to many, as SiriusXM and FNC have been partners for over 15 years. The Fox News Talk radio station has been a fixture on SiriusXM since the satellite radio service launched in 2001.

So what led to the decision to end the partnership? It’s hard to say for sure, but there are a few possible reasons:

1. Fox News Channel is launching its own streaming service.
On November 19, 2018, just two days before announcing the end of its partnership with SiriusXM, Fox News Channel announced that it would be launching its own streaming service called “Fox Nation” in 2019. The service will be available to both FNC cable subscribers and non-subscribers for a monthly fee.

It’s possible that Fox decided to launch its own streaming service so that it could keep all of the revenue from its talk radio content, rather than splitting it with SiriusXM.

2. Tensions between Rupert Murdoch and Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei.
Another possibility is that the decision was motivated by tensions between Rupert Murdoch (executive chairman of 21st Century Fox) and Greg Maffei (CEO of Liberty Media), which owns SiriusXM. The two media moguls have been locked in a power struggle ever since Murdoch agreed to sell most of 21st Century Fox to Disney earlier this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Murdoch is said to be upset with the way Maffei has handled the pending sale [of 21st Century Fox] and is said to believe that he should not have agreed to sell so much of the company — namely the movie studio and sports assets — in the first place.”

It’s possible that Murdoch decided to end the partnership with SiriusXM as a way of sticking it to Maffei and Liberty Media.

3. Increased competition from podcasts and other audio content providers.
Another factor that may have played a role in the decision is increased competition from podcasts and other audio content providers like Spotify and Pandora Radio. In recent years, SiriusXM has faced declining subscriber growth as more people have turned to alternative sources for their audio entertainment needs.
