Fox News has been a staple in American news broadcasting since it launched in 1996. It’s known for being one of the more conservative-leaning networks and has been a favorite of Republican viewers. But is it really just entertainment, or is it news?
The News Corporation
The News Corporation is an American multinational mass media corporation based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was one of two companies formed from the publishing assets of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, after the conglomerate split on June 28, 2013.
Rupert Murdoch
Rupert Murdoch is an Australian-American media mogul who founded the Fox News Channel. He is the executive chairman and CEO of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News. Murdoch began his career in newspapers in his native Australia before moving to the United Kingdom in the 1950s. He acquired a number of UK newspapers before expanding his media empire to the United States in the 1970s.
Murdoch launched Fox News in 1996 as a conservative alternative to what he saw as the liberal bias of mainstream news outlets. The channel has been a ratings success, and Murdoch has been a major supporter of its programming and personalities. However, Fox News has also been embroiled in several controversies, including allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination.

The network’s primetime shows are the most watched shows on cable news.[6] As of September 2018, they were the four highest-rated programs among the top 25 cable news programs: Hannity (2.329 million viewers), Tucker Carlson Tonight (2.286 million), The Ingraham Angle (2.27 million), and The Five (2.25 million).[7]
Daytime Shows
Fox News is a 24-hour cable news channel owned by the Fox Corporation that launched in October 1996. The network has been accused of having a conservative bias in its reporting. Fox News also airs daytime shows, some of which focus on entertainment and lifestyles, rather than news.
Here is a rundown of some of Fox News’ daytime shows:
“Fox & Friends” – This show airs weekday mornings from 6-9am ET. It is a mix of news and lifestyle segments, with the latter often featuring interviews with celebrities or tips on health, beauty and fashion.
“Outnumbered” – This show airs weekdays at noon ET. It features a panel of four female co-hosts who discuss the day’s top stories from multiple perspectives.
“The Five” – This show airs weekdays at 5pm ET. It features a panel of five co-hosts who discuss the day’s top stories from multiple perspectives.
“Hannity” – This show airs weekdays at 9pm ET. Sean Hannity is the host, and he often has guests on to discuss conservative issues from his point of view.

Fox News is provided in 86 countries or overseas territories worldwide, with international broadcasts featuring Fox Extra segments during commercial breaks.
The channel was created by Australian-American media mogul Rupert Murdoch to appeal to a conservative audience, hiring former Republican Party media consultant and CNBC executive Roger Ailes as its founding CEO. It launched on October 7, 1996, to 17 million cable subscribers.
Soft News
Soft news, also sometimes called features or human interest stories, is a type of journalism that communicates information without presenting it in a hard news format. Unlike hard news stories, which are usually focused on events or issues of public importance, soft news stories tend to be lighter in nature and focus more on people and human interest.
While soft news stories are not necessarily devoid of all news value, they often place less emphasis on the “who, what, where, when, and why” of an event and more on the “how” and “what if.” In this way, soft news can be seen as a type of journalism that is more focused on entertainment than it is on informing the public.
Despite the fact that soft news is often critiqued for being lightweight and unimportant, it plays an important role in the media landscape. For one thing, soft news stories are often more effective at holding people’s attention than hard news stories. They can also be used to introduce people to topics that they might not otherwise be interested in.
In addition, because they are often more personal and emotional than hard news stories, soft news stories can sometimes be more effective at forming connections with readers or viewers. The Critics of Fox News

In 2004, a study by the Pew Research Center found that Fox News was cited as a source more often by conservatives than by liberals and that Fox News viewers were more likely to be conservative than liberal. In 2009, another Pew Research Center study found that, among people who identified as Republicans, 55% named Fox News as their primary source of information about politics and current events, compared to 18% for CNN and 9% for MSNBC.
In 2010, the website Media Matters for America analyzed twelve hours of primetime programming on Fox News and found that only 8 minutes were devoted to coverage of actual news stories, while the rest consisted of opinion and commentary. In 2012, a study by the University of Maryland’s International Institute for Strategic Studies found that Fox News was ranked dead last in its commitment to accurate reporting, with only 33% of its content being classified as factual.
Lack of Objectivity
Fox News has been accused by some critics of lacking objectivity in its reporting. Critics say that Fox News has a conservative bias, and that it gives too much coverage to conservative viewpoints and not enough to liberal or progressive viewpoints.
