Countryside   21

Gibbs               7

Once Countryside decided to follow its big men, it coasted to a 21-7 victory.

Despite having an offensive line that averages close to 275 pounds, the Cougars ran 12 times vs. seven pass attempts. Though a 14-yard run by Terry Johnson produced a first-quarter score, the Cougars only led 7-0 at halftime. (more…)

Pinellas boys cross country preview

The 2010 boys cross country season will not be characterized by a changing of the guard but the return of an old one.

For years, Seminole dominated the boys cross country scene, winning district and conference titles en route to becoming a state title contender. The Warhawks, though, were challenged the past three seasons by Countryside, which fielded a deep lineup that was, top to bottom, the best in the county.

But graduation hit the Cougars hard. They said goodbye to their top three runners from last season. And they’re not alone. Of the eight runners who were either named runner of the year or first-team all-county last year, six graduated. (more…)

Eagle eye of Cougars’ D delivers

They came, they saw, they watched, then they watched some more.

And some more.

Countryside, Moore lay it all on the line this season

The wind swirled around the stadium, carrying the first signs of winter.  The Class 5A region final was played in a steady rain on a sloppy field Dec. 4 against defending state champion Plant.   Mud was smeared across uniforms, and no players were muddier than the offensive linemen,  who wear turf and sweat as badges of honor.

Preseason football 8/28/10: Countryside 7, Jesuit 7

Countryside  7

Jesuit              7

The scoreboard at Jesuit’s Alumni Field showed that the Tigers’ kickoff classic game Friday night with Countryside ended in a tie, but new Jesuit coach James Harrell saw it as a victory.

Pinellas girls and boys swimming preview

With the swimming season just five days away, there is one question overriding all others.

Where did everyone go?

Countryside’s Melanie Margalis and Mate Fabian, and Seminole’s Kaitlin Frehling, all state title winners from a year ago, graduated. The county’s other state champion, East Lake’s Taylor Katz, transferred to Sarasota Riverview. (more…)

Pinellas girls golf preview

It seems unfair, but reality dictates that the 2010 golf season for the Northside Christian girls team will be judged strictly on the Mustangs’ ability to win a state championship. (more…)

Countryside begins new era under Jared Davis

Countryside completed its finest season in school history in 2009, going 11-2 and advancing to the regional final before losing to eventual Class 5A state champion Plant.

If the Cougars hope to duplicate that success, however, they’ll have to do so with a virtually brand new cast of characters. (more…)
